Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between user and owner password?
User password is required to OPEN the PDF. Owner password is required to change permissions or remove encryption. You can set one or both.
Which algorithm should I pick?
AES-128 is a good default — compatible with any modern PDF reader. AES-256 is stronger but requires Acrobat X or later. Avoid RC4-128 unless you need legacy compatibility.
Can I remove the password later?
Yes — use the Unlock tool with the owner password (or user password if only one was set).
